Worth noting. Zimbabwe holds five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Victoria Falls (Mosi oa Tunya), Mana Pools, Great Zimbabwe, the Khami Ruins and the Matobo Hills, a remarkable spread of natural and cultural wonder.

Look forward to. The thunder of Victoria Falls, vast elephant herds in Hwange, canoe safaris on the Zambezi and walking safaris on the floodplains of Mana Pools.

For the safari enthusiast. Gonarezhou, the Place of Elephants, is one of Africa's last great wildernesses, remote and gloriously uncrowded. Matobo rewards you with balancing granite domes and some of the finest rhino tracking on the continent.

For the safari enthusiast. The Sabi Sand is famed for close, unhurried leopard sightings, while the Cape coast offers seasonal whale watching and a rare pairing of big city and big wild.

Worth noting. Zambia shares the UNESCO listed Victoria Falls (Mosi oa Tunya) with Zimbabwe, and from the Zambian side you can look straight into the gorge.

Look forward to. South Luangwa, the birthplace of the walking safari, the Lower Zambezi by canoe, and some of the most reliable leopard sightings in Africa.

For the safari enthusiast. In the dry season, the daring can swim to the very lip of the Falls at Devil's Pool. South Luangwa on foot, guided by expert scouts, remains one of the purest ways to experience the bush.

Worth noting. One of the least densely populated countries on earth, with two UNESCO sites, the Namib Sand Sea and the ancient rock engravings of Twyfelfontein. Buffalo are found mainly in the lush far northeast.

Look forward to. The towering dunes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, the waterholes of Etosha, the haunting Skeleton Coast, and desert adapted elephant and rhino in Damaraland.

For the safari enthusiast. Sunrise over the cracked white pan of Deadvlei is unforgettable, and Namibia offers some of the darkest, clearest night skies anywhere on the planet.

Worth noting. Botswana is home to the UNESCO listed Okavango Delta and the Tsodilo Hills, and the Chobe holds one of the largest elephant populations in Africa.

Look forward to. Gliding through the Delta by mokoro, huge elephant herds along the Chobe river, and the game rich channels of Moremi.

For the safari enthusiast. See the Okavango in flood, when the desert becomes a maze of water, then contrast it with the vast salt pans of Makgadikgadi and the timeless silence of the Kalahari.
